Nepali is the national language. It is Sanskrit based and therefore related to Hindi and other regional languages. Hindi speakers will often find they are well understood (the effect of Bollywood and itinerant work in India!). There are also numerous local languages. English is very widely understood especially in towns and by the more educated including school children. We have a simple ENT / Audio Nepali vocabulary list which many have used to great effect if you feel up to it! We also make sure we have someone to help translate for visitors in outpatients; often the local para-medicals enjoy this opportunity. Our doctors and many nurses and paramedicals speak English.
